I was able to track down Austin Daye after the game as well. I didn't think I was going to because at this point the gym was crazy packed and it was almost impossible to move anywhere. They said over the PA system that they were over capacity, combining this with the fact that it was still 100 degrees at 5 oclock made today very uncomfortable, but a lot of fun. Daye signed my photo and took a picture with me as well.
Next up I saw a few faces in the crowd that I recognized. Speaking about how crowded this place was at this point was a massive understatement. You just couldn't move. I saw Tayshaun Prince, Rudy Gay, Ty Lawson, and Nick Young in the stands. I had items for Nick Young and Tayshaun Prince on hand, but I had no clue that Gay and Lawson would be there and I didn't know if they were "ball worthy" I got Tayshaun Prince to sign a card and a photo, Tyshaun was not that cool and didn't even look at me when I asked him to sign, he just kept looking forward and signed my items. I can't complain.
I was also able to find Nick Young as well, I am a big fan of Nick, or "Swaggy P" because of what he did to help the Clippers come back from a 27 point deficit in the playoffs against the Memphis Grizzles. I am a Clipper fan, even though no one seems to remember me being a Clipper fan since the 90's and everyone wants to call me a bandwagoner. I got Nick to sign two photos, he looked at me and said, "Waittttttt man how did you know I was going to be here." I said, "Come on Nick you are a local guy and show up to this kind of stuff all the time, I have to try and be prepared, otherwise I wouldn't have gotten your signature." He replied, "Nice man I can dig that I got you."
Back to the Drew League action. I was there with my family and I had my nephews with me because I was on babysitting duty at this point of my Saturdays worth of autographing. I was proud that they are starting to get into basketball and were able to sit still and enjoy all the big name players on the court. They also were able to help me get some signatures, we will get to that a little later on. The match-up was between Kings of La, which had Hasan Adams, Dorrel Wright, and Tyreke Evans. Dorrel Wright had a huge dunk during the game vs. Money Gang, which had Terrence Williams, J.R. Smith, Metta World Peace, Demar Derozan, Paul George, John Wall, and The Game. I didn't know a few of those guys would be there ala Smith and World Peace, but I was happy the big guys showed up. The Money Gang won and I just waited for the guys to come out of the locker room, like I said my nephews were helping me out. First up was Paul George
Demar Derozan was next out
Next up was Tyreke Evans, he didn't seem too thrilled to do it, but he eventually did
Dorell Wright was the next player out, I meet Dorrel Wright last week at Brandon Jennings Flag Football Game Dorrel was wearing some really cool shoes, and I just asked him real quickly if I could have the shoes, without saying anything he took the shoes out of his bag and signed them for me. Which was really cool. The shoes not only have the Warriors colors, which is the team he has been playing for the past few seasons, but it has a cartoon image of himself on the tongue and on the back it has "DW1" Just a really cool piece of memorabilia that will be an awesome addition to my collection.
Once my nephews saw me get the shoes they got extremely jealous and wanted their own pair of shoes, so they had the brilliant idea of asking Metta World Peace aka Ron Artest for his shoes because they liked the purple and yellow he was wearing. They ran up to him and asked him for his shoes, he waived at them and they asked him again. He looked down at his shoes and looked up at my nephews and said, "yes" I was shocked to see him walk away into the locker room at that. They were confused and I told them that I didn't understand either, he can be kind of a weird dude. A few minutes later Artest or Peace, however you want to say it; came out of the locker room with the shoes already signed and handed one shoe to each of my nephews. It absolutely blew my mind. He signed them "Metta World Peace 15" I thought this was crazy because I went to a signing he had at a Staples this year and he was signing RA15. I even included a video where he talked about how he doesn't sign "Metta World Peace." Check it out for yourselves. Anyway here are the pictures of the shoes and my nephews. Really amazing
The last player out was John Wall, everything I have shown up to this point has been an 8x10, but for wall I had two 8x10's and an 11x14. I asked him to sign my 11x14 in the dark area because I was using a silver pen, and he replied, "I am only signing one for you." I found that kind of weird because I was only asking for one. I had my nephews there asking for the 8x10's, but I only presented him with one. The 11x14 didn't come out as well as I wanted to, but I will take it. Like I said last week, I am a big fan of John Wall.
It was an absolutely crazy day at the Drew League, I came away with tons of stuff signed that I brought to get signed and even more stuff that players just gave to me. I am really bummed out that tomorrow is the final and I will have to wait a year for more Drew League action.
